How to Choose the Right Lifting Belt: Width, Thickness & Style

Choosing a lifting belt can seem needlessly complicated. Belts come in different materials, widths, thicknesses, and buckle styles, with prices ranging from less than $50 to several hundred dollars. Some lifters insist that everyone needs a thick four-inch powerlifting belt, while others prefer a thinner and narrower belt. Lever belts are convenient, but prong belts are easier to adjust. Even sizing becomes confusing because a lifting belt is not fitted according to your pants size.
The good news is that choosing the right lifting belt becomes much easier once you understand what the belt is supposed to accomplish. In a conversation on Mondays with Matt, Matt Reynolds spoke with Blake Wilson, founder and CEO of Dominion Strength Training, about how a lifting belt works, when to begin wearing one, and which features matter most. Wilson began making belts nearly ten years ago after struggling to find one that was simultaneously high quality, made in the United States, and available without a long wait. His background as a mechanical engineer helped him approach belt design through materials, construction, and performance rather than appearance alone.
The right belt should allow you to brace hard, fit your body without interfering with the lift, and withstand years of regular training. That does not mean every lifter needs the same belt. The best choice depends on your torso, training, preferences, and need for adjustability. Understanding those variables will help you buy a belt that improves your training and may last for the rest of your lifting life.
What Does a Lifting Belt Actually Do?
A lifting belt gives your trunk a rigid surface to brace against. Before a heavy squat, press, or deadlift, you take a breath, hold it, and contract the muscles of your torso. Without a belt, your midsection expands outward as you create that brace. With a properly tightened belt around your waist, that outward expansion meets resistance. The belt helps redirect the pressure internally and allows you to produce a stronger, more stable contraction throughout your trunk.
This is why describing a belt as back support can be misleading. A belt does not simply prop up the lower back, and it should not do the work that your trunk muscles would otherwise perform. It helps you brace your entire midsection more effectively. Matt compared the effect to the metal bands around a wooden barrel: pressure pushes outward while the rigid band holds the structure together. Under a loaded barbell, that additional stability helps the lifter maintain a set back position and transmit force from the floor, through the body, and into the bar.
A lifting belt is therefore not a crutch, nor does wearing one inherently weaken your abdominal muscles. You must actively brace against it for the belt to work. It is better understood as a training aid, much like the barbell itself. A barbell allows you to apply a precise and progressively heavier load; a belt allows you to create a harder brace as those loads become more demanding. It does not replace sound technique, proper programming, or muscular strength. It helps a trained lifter use all three more effectively.
When Should You Start Wearing a Lifting Belt?
There is no universal weight at which every lifter must begin using a belt. The relevant question is whether the lifter has developed enough control of the basic lifts to benefit from a stronger brace. A complete beginner first needs to learn how to breathe, hold the breath, set the back, and perform the movement consistently. Once those foundations are in place and the weights have become challenging enough that trunk stability matters, a good belt becomes useful training equipment rather than a distraction.
Matt typically introduces the belt first on the overhead press. Because the lifter remains upright, the press makes it relatively easy to learn how to breathe and brace against the belt without also managing a large change in torso angle. After a few sessions, he introduces it on the squat. The lifter begins standing tall, establishes the brace, and then carries that pressure through the descent and ascent. The deadlift often comes last because bending over with a belt can initially feel restrictive and requires more experimentation with position, tightness, and width.
A belt can also be worn during the bench press, but it is less necessary because the spine is not loaded in the same way. Some lifters like using one because it gives them something to brace against and reinforces the Valsalva maneuver. Others find that it adds little. The belt earns its place most clearly during the squat, press, deadlift, and other heavy standing movements in which the lifter must maintain a rigid torso while transferring force.
Choose a Belt Made From Material That Will Not Stretch
Material quality is the first feature to consider when learning how to choose the right lifting belt. A belt only works when it remains rigid under tension. If the material stretches as you brace, the belt moves away from your abdomen instead of giving you a firm surface to push against. The material must also tolerate thousands of repetitions without tearing around the holes, deforming, or losing its ability to resist pressure.
For a leather lifting belt, Wilson recommends top-grain or full-grain leather because both retain the structural strength needed for long-term use. Many inexpensive belts use split leather, which comes from the lower portion of the hide. Split leather has legitimate uses, but it is less suitable for a lifting belt because it is more likely to stretch and wear. One common sign of failure is a prong tearing from one adjustment hole into the next. Once the hole a lifter needs can no longer hold the prong, the belt is effectively useless.
Nylon and Velcro belts can be convenient, especially in training contexts that demand quick transitions, but they bring different limitations. The material may stretch, and the Velcro will eventually wear out. For a lifter who regularly squats, presses, and deadlifts, a well-made leather belt provides the rigidity and durability required for a long-term purchase. The upfront cost is higher than that of a cheap belt, but the more meaningful comparison is between buying one quality belt and repeatedly replacing belts that stretch, tear, or fail at the buckle.
How Thick Should a Lifting Belt Be?
Many lifters assume that a thicker belt is always better. Traditional powerlifting belts are often 10 or 13 millimeters thick, and a thick belt can provide an extremely rigid surface for bracing. But maximum stiffness is not automatically maximum usefulness. A belt that is needlessly thick may be uncomfortable, difficult to break in, or more restrictive than a lifter needs. The goal is to find enough rigidity to resist the brace without choosing more belt than your training and body require.
Wilson has seen increasing demand for thinner single-ply belts, often around six to seven millimeters thick. A single piece of high-quality vegetable-tanned leather at that thickness can provide the essential qualities a strength trainee needs: it resists stretching, holds its shape, and does not tear apart at the holes. A 10-millimeter double-ply belt provides more stiffness and may appeal to experienced lifters who prefer a more substantial belt, but it is not the minimum effective option.
Thinner belts can be particularly comfortable during the deadlift because the lifter must flex at the hips and set up close to the thighs. They also tend to conform to the body more readily. Matt has used both 10-millimeter belts and thinner single-ply belts and especially likes the thinner option for deadlifts. Lifters should treat thickness as a balance between rigidity and comfort rather than a simple hierarchy in which the thickest belt is always the best.
Should You Choose a 2.5-, 3-, or 4-Inch Lifting Belt?
Belt width determines how much of the torso the belt covers, and the correct width depends more on body proportions than absolute height. Wilson offers a useful starting point: lifters between approximately 5 feet 4 inches and 6 feet tall will often find a three-inch belt comfortable. Those taller than 6 feet may have enough torso length for a four-inch belt, while lifters under 5 feet 4 inches may be better served by a two-and-a-half-inch belt. These are guidelines rather than rules, but they provide a reasonable place to begin.
Torso length can override the height guideline. Two people who are both 5 feet 10 inches tall can require different belts if one has a long torso and shorter legs while the other has a short torso and longer legs. A long-torsoed lifter has more space between the ribs and hips and may tolerate a four-inch belt easily. A short-torsoed lifter may find that the same belt digs into the ribs or impinges on the hips, particularly during a deadlift. In that case, a three-inch or two-and-a-half-inch belt can provide plenty of surface for bracing without interfering with the starting position.
Body mass, leanness, age, and lifting style can also affect the decision. A lifter with more mass around the abdomen may tolerate a wider belt because there is more tissue between the leather and the ribs or hips. A leaner lifter may notice those contact points more acutely. Some lifters prefer a four-inch belt for squats and presses but a three-inch belt for deadlifts, where the narrower profile leaves more room to bend over and draw a full breath. If you want one belt for every lift and are uncertain between sizes, a three-inch belt is often the more versatile starting point for an average-height lifter.
Prong vs. Lever Belt: Which Is Better?
Prong and lever belts can both perform exceptionally well. The decision is not about which buckle style creates a better brace; it is about whether the lifter values easier adjustment or easier fastening. A prong belt works like a heavy-duty traditional belt. It takes slightly more effort to pull tight and buckle, although lifters can use a rack upright to help tension the belt. Its main advantage is immediate adjustability. Moving one hole tighter or looser requires no tools and takes only a few seconds.
That flexibility matters for lifters who use different levels of tightness on different exercises. Someone may prefer a tighter belt on the deadlift or press than on the squat, or may need to make small adjustments as body weight changes. A prong belt also has the classic appearance many lifters associate with traditional strength training. Wilson personally returned to a prong belt after wearing a lever belt for roughly two years, largely because he likes the look and the ability to change the fit easily.
A lever belt is much easier to fasten. Once the lever has been installed in the proper position, the lifter wraps the belt around the waist and closes it with one motion. That convenience explains why lever belts are common in powerlifting competitions, where lifters may not have a rack available to help buckle a prong belt and want to eliminate unnecessary effort before an attempt. The tradeoff is that changing the belt’s tightness requires moving the lever with a screwdriver. A lever belt works best for someone whose waist measurement and preferred belt tension remain consistent across lifts.
Hardware quality matters with either style. On a prong belt, look for a seamless roller that will not separate and scratch the leather or the lifter. Stainless steel resists corrosion, while large-headed rivets reduce the likelihood that the hardware will pull through the leather. A lever should have tight tolerances and a secure trip point so that it does not pop open under pressure. Excessive play, loose movement, or poorly fitted hardware can indicate that a manufacturer saved money on the very components that must hold the belt together during a heavy lift.
How to Measure and Size a Lifting Belt Correctly
Do not choose a lifting belt according to your pants size. Measure around your waist at approximately the level of your belly button, where you expect the belt to sit. Stand normally rather than sucking in your stomach or deliberately pushing it outward. The resulting measurement provides the starting point for comparing your waist with the manufacturer’s sizing chart, although the hole you actually use may be slightly smaller because the belt will be pulled tight during training.
Wilson gave the example of a lifter who measures 38 inches around the waist. That person may wear the belt at approximately 36 inches once it is tightened. On Dominion’s sizing system, a medium runs from 30 to 40 inches, placing the lifter close to the center of the available adjustment range. Centering the likely training measurement within the belt’s range gives the lifter room to gain or lose weight without immediately outgrowing the belt.
Quality belt sizing systems often include overlap between adjacent sizes. If a medium covers 30 to 40 inches, the large may begin at 35 inches and continue to 45. When two sizes could fit, consider the direction your body weight is likely to move. A lean lifter planning a prolonged weight-gain phase might choose the larger option, while someone actively losing fat should usually choose the smaller. Wilson noted that the overwhelming majority of Dominion’s sizing exchanges occur because a customer selected a belt that was too large rather than too small. When genuinely caught between sizes, the smaller belt is often the safer choice.
What Separates a Quality Lifting Belt From a Cheap One?
A quality lifting belt is not defined by decoration, branding, or thickness alone. Its leather must remain rigid under tension. The holes must withstand repeated loading without tearing. The buckle or lever must stay secure, and the rivets must distribute force without pulling through the hide. The belt should be cut, finished, and assembled so that its edges, stitching, and hardware survive years of regular use. These features are difficult to judge from a product photograph, which is why the manufacturer’s material specifications and reputation matter.
Construction also explains why two belts that look similar can perform differently. Dominion begins with full hides, grades them for quality and length, and cuts them into straps of the appropriate width. Depending on the belt, the leather may be split to a precise thickness, dyed, glued into multiple plies, sanded, beveled, punched, stitched, and fitted with hardware. Single-ply belts require clean, structurally sound leather because both surfaces remain visible, while hides with a cosmetic imperfection on one side can still become double-ply belts without sacrificing structural integrity.
That control over materials and manufacturing became especially valuable during supply-chain disruptions. Because Dominion makes its belts in its Florida shop, Wilson could manage shortages at the component level rather than waiting for a finished product from an overseas supplier. At one point, the company purchased roughly two years of roller buckles to maintain production. The story illustrates a broader principle for buyers: a company that understands and controls its materials is better positioned to maintain consistent quality than one that simply attaches its name to a finished belt.
How to Choose the Right Lifting Belt for Your Training
For most strength trainees, the best lifting belt is a full-grain or top-grain leather belt that fits comfortably between the ribs and hips, resists stretching, and uses dependable hardware. A six- to seven-millimeter single-ply belt is enough for many lifters and offers a useful combination of rigidity and comfort. A 10-millimeter double-ply belt is appropriate for someone who prefers a stiffer feel. Thirteen-millimeter belts remain an option for competitive powerlifters and lifters who know they want maximum stiffness, but they are not the default requirement for productive strength training.
Width should follow torso length and comfort. A three-inch belt is a versatile starting point for many average-height lifters, particularly those who want one belt for squats, presses, and deadlifts. A four-inch belt may suit a taller or long-torsoed lifter, while a two-and-a-half-inch belt can solve problems for a shorter, leaner, or short-torsoed lifter. Choose a prong buckle if you expect to adjust the tightness frequently. Choose a lever if you value quick fastening and tend to use one consistent setting.
Most importantly, buy according to function rather than the assumption that bigger, thicker, or more expensive must be better. The right belt is the one that lets you create a stronger brace without distracting you or interfering with your position. When the leather, fit, and hardware are all right, a lifting belt becomes a simple piece of training equipment: put it on, brace hard, and lift.
