Show Notes

Barbell Logic started as a logical, systematic walk through the basics of strength training, starting with the question: why strength? Since then we’ve branched out to all aspects of training, from novice to advanced, rehab to competition, with a healthy dose of life advice and philosophy derived from years under the bar. So, we thought it was about time to return to our roots, and there was no better way to do so than sharing a recent podcast we did with Kyle Ingham of the Distilled Man Podcast.

In today’s show we make the argument for why someone should get strong, and why they should use barbells to do it, to a host totally unfamiliar with the process. We point out how there are essentially infinite exercise variations one could do at the gym, but upon applying some simple criteria for optimizing strength (the Three Criteria), that infinite list of exercises can be narrowed down to just four. Those four exercises — the squat, press, deadlift, and bench press — are simple, compound exercises that each train the whole body. And while they are simple, they are also very hard to do, and that combination of simple and hard yields exercises that are also effective.

We all love to nerd out about programming, mechanics, nutrition, and the other details of training, but it’s important to revisit the basics. The world is full of novices, and therefore full of potential strength gains! Training doesn’t need to be complicated. Four exercises are all you need to build the strongest body you’ve ever had.
