Client Spotlight: Bobby Pierce

From Bobby's Coach: "Bobby is a super hard-working family man that has been with us for almost three years (May 2017). Recently made huge improvements in his body composition during 2019 as one of my nutrition clients and is still hitting PRs. He and his wife are both working professionals with a young son (posted his bench press video today), have a dog, and are just great people all around. Bobby was also at our camp last year in Springfield, competed in the USSF, and is 100% bought into the Barbell Logic world."
We’re shining the spotlight on the Barbell Logic community of lifters, coaches, and students. Everyone has a different answer to the fundamental question “Why strength?” Find out what drives your fellow barbell advocates, learn what gets them out of bed and into the gym most days, and maybe discover some new lifting songs.

Client Spotlight: Bobby P.

What do your parents or spouse call you when you are in trouble?

Body language speaks louder than words. And who says I get in trouble? 🙂

Do you have any embarrassing nicknames? What are they?

Booby…but since I’m not in middle school it’s been retired.

What is your occupation?

Project Manager

Who is your BLOC Coach?

Andrew Jackson

What is something your coach has had to tell you a million and one times?

Knees forward – butt back – bury it

What is your favorite lift?

Power Clean

Where do you live?

Do you lift in a home gym or a public gym?

Home gym

Gym cat, dog or something else?

How long have you been training?

With BLOC – 3 Years in the spring

Why did you start lifting?

I want to be an upright and able 80-year-old.

What do you love about training?

I love the pursuit of learning and how through this process you improve every part of your life.

What lifting achievement are you most proud of?

Shaving off over five inches around my waist this past year, then besting my previous lifts at a lower bodyweight.

Would you rather magically increase each of your PRs by 20% or increase one of your lifts by 100%?

Increase each PR by 20%

Describe a time after you started training when someone noticed your gains. What was it like?

My current CIO has mentioned to me multiple times that I look like I”m getting stronger and to take the weekend off because I’m making everyone else look bad.

What or who gets you to train when your motivation is really low?

I am pretty intrinsically motivated, but there are many times I lean on the accountability of my coach. If I really do not want to train, I pretend he is judging me hard. He puts a lot of work into my programming and lift reviews. I do not want to waste his time. I hate wasting people’s time.

Pre-workout of choice

I recently started drinking a BCAA pre-workout caffeine drink (before it was straight coffee)

What are some of your go-to lifting songs?

I change it up—from piano, rap, country to pop…depends on the mood—when I’m lifting the music fades away

What is the most embarrassing song you like?

Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat (In a former life I was a DJ…I blame that)

What’s one of your personal lifting superstitions?

I tend to want to wear wrist wraps for all my lifts.

What are some of your lifting-related goals for this year?

I want to blow past my previous deadlift PR as a lower bodyweight

Do you plan on competing in a meet this year? If so, what are your goals?

Yes—beat all of my previous meet PRs.

What have you learned about yourself from barbell training?

I learned that I let my limiting beliefs dictate my actions far too much. The experience of barbell training allows me to challenge those beliefs by putting myself in new situations that test my body and mind.

Who is someone you’d love to try barbell training and why?

Everyone in my family. I feel it could significantly improve their health.

Do you have a role model? Who is it and why?

A mentor of mine. I asked him how he achieved what he achieved in business. He told me that he is present with people. If he’s in a meeting, he’s in that meeting focused. If he’s talking to you, he’s right there with you, taking a genuine interest in your life. So good.

Dead or alive, who would you love to lift with?

Cal Strength Olympic Weightlifting Team circa 2010

If BLOC made a yearbook, which do you think you’d most likely win?

Most likely to have a schedule conflict and push a day (but I’m trying to fix that!)

How much do you love to eat? 1, It’s a chore – 5, What are we eating next???

What’s your favorite meal? Please use as much detail as possible.

Sous vide sirloin steak (garlic, olive oil, rosemary, salt pepper) and mashed potatoes

What was your favorite childhood TV show?

What is a movie that you have watched over and over and over again?

The Devil Wears Prada – don’t judge

Tell us your best dad joke.

A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.”

Anything else you would like to share with your BLOC brethren and sistren?

I am honored to be a member of this community. I’ve never seen so many smart, go-getters all in one spot, all trying to better themselves. I feel this helps all of us push ourselves to another level and I am a better man for it. Thank you!
