The Whole Picture
Matt Reynolds & Niki Sims

Matt Reynolds has over 20 years of experience competing in strength sports and coaching barbell-based strength and conditioning. In his earlier life, he totaled “elite” in multiple weight classes in powerlifting and earned his professional status in the sport of strongman. In 2008, Matt founded one of the strongest and largest strength gyms in the country, STRONG Gym, which he sold in 2015 to turn his attention to the broader audience of online coaching.

Today his focus is on improving the quality of life of his clients and staff through the refining power of voluntary hardship (primarily through strength training). In 2016, Matt founded Barbell Logic, a company built to provide the highest quality online strength coaching and educational content in the industry from the finest coaches on the planet with unsurpassed customer service.

Barbell Logic has grown to be one of the largest online coaching companies on the planet, with a successful podcast, YouTube channel, and hundreds of articles on the value of strength training. However, none of this would have been possible without the hard work and support of his incredible staff (and the support of his family).

Niki is Barbell Logic’s Chief Experience Officer and an Exclusive Coach.

With over a decade of coaching experience, Niki has gained invaluable experience coaching men and women from all training backgrounds, or lack thereof, who have diverse and important goals.

Prior to becoming a dedicated strength coach, she spent many hours chasing aesthetic and flighty goals. Constantly feeling unfulfilled and stuck, it was through dedicated barbell training that she started to fully appreciate the big picture or strength. Goals are now driven by true internal values and motivation, and she hopes to help her clients find the same feeling of fulfillment in their abilities.

Niki believes that through these basic barbell exercises, one is able to connect to something that brings tremendous value to his or her life in countless ways. Through the process of becoming stronger, her clients are rewarded with confidence, usefulness, youthfulness, and growth.

Niki competes in powerlifting and strengthlifting with personal bests of a 290 lb. squat, 120 lb. press, 200 lb. bench, 430 lb. deadlift, and a 100lb. weighted chin-up. She also practices jiu-jitsu and loves to watch sunsets over the beach.

Sustainable Nutrition
Gillian Ward

Gillian Ward, originally from Queens, NY, currently lives in Eastern North Carolina and is a gym owner, head strength & conditioning coach, professional athlete, consultant, fitness model, and writer. She has a degree in exercise physiology from Hofstra University with a specialty in cardiac rehabilitation.

“My key strategy is that every moment is a new opportunity for improvement. Every meal, every workout, every rep, every article written, every client that I coach provides an opportunity to learn.”

After 20 years in the fitness industry, Gillian founded the first black iron strength and conditioning gym in Eastern North Carolina, Crystal Coast Strength & Conditioning. Her primary objective is to teach strength training with barbells to people of all ages and abilities. Her lifelong professional mission is to improve quality of life through training, education, and community development.

Gillian was a gymnast at the age of two and competed at the national level until she was 17. She was also a highly accomplished track and field athlete. Gillian distinguished herself in 1995 when she won the United States Marine Corps National Physical Fitness Championship, a competition that included push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, a 300 yd shuttle run, and standing broad jump.

Throughout her twenties, Gillian expanded her pursuits to include ballroom dance, modern dance, and mixed martial arts while continuing to train in the gym. In 2008, she placed 3rd in the CrossFit Games after only three months of specialized training.

Following CrossFit, Gillian found her true passion in barbell sports. Since 2011, she has competed in powerlifting, including a win at the 2013 Southern Powerlifting Federation (SPF) National Championship. Gillian set SPF and Global powerlifting Committee world records in three weight classes—165, 148, and 132s. She has also excelled in Olympic weightlifting and strongman competitions.

As a physique competitor, Gillian entered and won her first women’s physique competition at the 2014 North Carolina Body Building‬‬ Championships, earning her right to compete at the 2014 North American Body Building‬‬ Championships. There, she won her International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) Professional card. She has since gone on to be a successful pro women’s physique competitor and took home a 6th place finish at the 2016 IFBB Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival (“The Arnold”).

On October 22nd, 2016, Gillian set the Guinness Book of World Records record for push-ups by completing 1190 repetitions in 1 hour. Her successful attempt was part of a fundraiser that she organized in order to raise money for the advancement of physical education in Carteret County public schools. As part of her outreach, she visited every public elementary and middle school in the county to teach classes on physical fitness and nutrition.

In 2017, Gillian competed in the IFBB New York Pro, where she took 2nd place as a last-minute (day of competition) entrant. She also competed at the USS Southern States Women’s Cup Strongman Competition in Tampa. She then followed that up six weeks later with a win at the Super League World Championships, becoming the Middleweight and Overall Champion of the World in a new sport that blended both bodybuilding and strength events.

Gillian has since temporarily stepped away from the competitive spotlight to focus all of her attention on developing new programs and helping others achieve their goals. She has spent a lifetime successfully training others from all demographics. She derives true personal satisfaction from the gift of quality of life improvement through movement.

Gillian has provided nutrition coaching for in-person and online clients since 2012. In addition to individualized services, she conducts both a free educational nutritional lecture series that is open to the public at her gym as well as an annual Nutritional Transformation Challenge that combines barbell training, individualized nutritional plans, tracking of metrics, and weekly meetings to ensure success, motivate, and inspire the participants. Gillian is Precision Nutrition Level 1 certified.

She has extensive experience with public outreach, teaching healthy eating habits to children, as well as contest prep nutrition for weight class athletes and bodybuilding competitors from the novice to the pro level.

Additionally, Gillian specializes in the military community helping active duty service members perform better and remain in or achieve their body weight/body composition requirements.

Andrew is Barbell Logic’s Chief Operating Officer and an Exclusive Coach. He has a diverse professional and athletic background and specializes in integrating strength training into a balanced life of work, family, and competition. He grew up playing multiple sports culminating in three varsity letters as the stroke seat of the Oregon State Men’s Rowing Team, a top ten crew in the country. He also earned Pac-10 First-Team All-Conference and All-Academic honors in 2001. As an adult, Andrew has primarily competed in Olympic weightlifting.

Having experience as both a competitive collegiate athlete as well as a working parent competing during the weekend, Andrew has a unique combination of both professional and personal expertise balancing family life, work, and training.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering on an academic scholarship at Oregon State, Andrew served in the US Navy for six years as a Surface Warfare Officer with a specialty in nuclear power operations. Upon completing his military service, Andrew entered the corporate arena and worked as an operations leader and executive in the aerospace and electronics manufacturing industry for ten years. During that time, he completed a Masters in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University. Andrew joined Barbell Logic in 2016 as a staff coach and eventually joined the company in a full-time position in 2019.

After personally benefiting from strength training he is passionate about helping others along their strength journey. CJ is the Director of the Barbell Academy and an Exclusive Coach.

CJ has a diverse athletic background, having competed in Cross Country, Soccer, Tae Kwon Do Obstacle Course Racing, and currently powerlifting.

He started coaching as a Physical Training Officer at the United States Naval Academy, helping midshipmen prepare for the Physical Readiness Test and service selection tests before serving seven years as a Naval Surface Warfare Officer. There, he took on a variety of roles, including leading a Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure team and serving as an operations support officer with SEAL Team 8.

Since completing his service in 2015, CJ started coaching full-time with CrossFit 760 and independently coaching lifters to reach their barbell and calisthenics strength goals. CJ joined Barbell Logic in 2016 as a staff coach, began teaching Academy classes in 2018, and became the Academy Director in 2020.

CJ sees barbell training as a way to serve and support a person’s deep why in sport, mission, and life. Matt Reynolds & Colin Slade

Colin Slade

Matt Reynolds has over 20 years of experience competing in strength sports and coaching barbell-based strength and conditioning. In his earlier life, he totaled “elite” in multiple weight classes in powerlifting and earned his professional status in the sport of strongman. In 2008, Matt founded one of the strongest and largest strength gyms in the country, STRONG Gym, which he sold in 2015 to turn his attention to the broader audience of online coaching.

Barbell Logic has grown to be one of the largest online coaching companies on the planet, with a successful podcast, YouTube channel, and hundreds of articles on the value of strength training. However, none of this would have been possible without the hard work and support of his incredible staff (and the support of his family).

Colin is a Captain in the United States Air Force, serving on Active Duty as a Civil Engineering officer for 7 years and now in the Reserve as a Space Operations Officer. He has deployed multiple times in support of various operations. He is also the host and producer of CommissionED: The Air Force Officer Podcast.

Colin began his strength journey in 2016 after being fed up with his lack of progress within standard military physical training. After reading the blue book and teaching himself the lifts, he soon realized that he needed help from a coach. So he signed up for BLOC in May 2017 and has been a client ever since. He has since found not only the progress he desired but community and support that only Barbell Logic can provide. He has completed the Barbell Logic Coaching Academy and Seminar and is now working toward certification as a Professional Barbell Coach.

Colin now works for Barbell Logic as the Military Sales Executive, striving to help commanders at all levels of the Armed Forces turn their soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines into stronger, healthier, and more effective warriors.

While fun, none were as impactful as forging a foundation of strength. Her one regret in life is not getting under the barbell sooner.
