Before and after: Josh and his wife looking sharp!

What lifting achievement are you most proud of?

My 465 deadlift. That came at the end of a training block and was a 30lb. PR and 130lbs. more than when I started with SSOC 15 months beforehand. After spending the bulk of 2018 going from a severe SI joint injury, to a debilitating AC joint injury, and then back to a re-aggravation of the SI joint, hitting 465 in March of this year was pretty meaningful.

What do your parents or spouse call you when you are in trouble?

Inappropriate things

What is your occupation?

Contract Negotiator for the US Air Force

Who is your SSOC Coach?

Will Morris

What is something your coach has had to tell you a million and one times?

On the squat, it has become a consistent reminder to shove my traps into the bar to avoid slamming my knees back out of the hole.

What is your favorite lift?

Where do you live?

Dayton, Ohio

Do you lift in a home gym or a public gym?

Home gym

Gym cat or dog?

How long have you been training?

I started my weightlifting journey in late 2016/early 2017 but finally wised up and joined SSOC in December 2017.

Why did you start lifting?

My wife and I don’t have kids to pawn ourselves onto in old age so I have to make sure I can lift my own ass off the toilet seat when the time comes.

What do you love about training?

The feel of the knurling and the benefit of staying committed to something very few others will.

Did you ever think at any point in your life that someday you’d be as strong as you are now?

Describe a time after you started training when someone noticed your gains. What was it like?

We had a work event on a 12-person pedal wagon (self-propelled alcohol consumption vehicle) and I chose a seat that had no pedals attached (because duh). After about 10 minutes the guy next to me jokingly complained while pointing to me, “Josh is built like a brick shithouse and just sitting there while I’m over here pedaling my ass off.” I told him I got this way because I don’t do cardio but that I appreciated his contribution nonetheless. Having others recognize the work I’ve put in when I don’t always see it myself is encouraging.

What or who gets you to train when your motivation is really low?

There are many days where I can view the training as a burden but I’m stubborn. I’m paying for an exceptional product and my coach is putting in his part of the deal. I owe it to the process to hold up my end of the bargain.

Pre-workout of choice

I train at 5am and I’m too lazy to wake up even earlier to eat so my pre-workout has become a dose of C4 and pray I finish before I get too hungry.

What are some of your go-to lifting songs?

I’m a psychotic who only listens to books and podcasts while I lift.

What is the most embarrassing song you like?

While I’m a devotee to ’90s grunge, there’s something beautiful about “All My Life” by K-Ci & JoJo

What’s one of your personal lifting superstitions?

Since 28 Dec 2017 I’ve missed 2 scheduled training sessions. At almost 39 years old, I’m convinced skipping a training day is progress I’ll never have a chance to make again.

What are some of your lifting-related goals for this year?

500 pound deadlift, 325 bench

What have you learned about yourself from barbell training?

I’m even more stubborn than I thought.

Dead or alive, who would you love to lift with?

My wife and I generally lift together. That’s perfect enough for me.

If SSOC made a yearbook, which do you think you’d most likely win?

Least likely to do accessory work.

Do you love to eat?

I’ve had more than a handful of waiters/waitresses state, “…are you sure? That’s a lot of food.”

What’s your favorite meal? Please use as much detail as possible.

Two things at the moment: 1) Chicken Pad Thai w/ extra chicken and a rainbow sushi roll from Thai 9 in Dayton and, 2) An 11″ Dr. Dre with extra chicken and extra ranch from Dewey’s (olive oil, mozzarella, green peppers, chicken, bacon, house-pickled jalapenos, w/ tomatoes and ranch after the bake)

What was your favorite childhood TV show?

Just one?! How about two: Airwolf and MacGyver

What are a couple of your favorite books?

1689 London Baptist Confession; Discipline Equals Freedom Field Manual; The Complete Maus; Reclaiming Conversation; Never Split the Difference; A Gospel Primer for Christians
